Bharti Airtel and Tata Group have ended their merger discussions for their direct-to-home (DTH) businesses-Airtel’s Bharti Telemedia and Tata Play. The talks, which began in February 2025, aimed to consolidate their DTH services amid rising competition and a shift towards digital streaming. However, both companies announced they could not reach a mutually acceptable agreement and have "mutually decided to terminate the discussions," according to a stock exchange filing.

The proposed merger would have been the second major consolidation in India’s DTH sector after the Dish TV-Videocon d2h merger in 2016. The deal reportedly involved a share swap, valuing both businesses at around ₹6,000-7,000 crore each. As the DTH market faces challenges from streaming platforms and declining subscriber numbers, both Airtel and Tata Play will now continue to operate independently, seeking new strategies to stay competitive.
